AI upgrade & Checks That Matter

AI upgrade & Checks That Matter. My AI Got an Upgrade. I Got Homework.

The announcement arrives wearing a cape. Smarter. Faster. More capable. Then I ask it to tidy a paragraph, and it returns six headings, twelve bullet points and a personality I never ordered. Congratulations. My AI has been promoted. I have become its unpaid proofreader.

My migration from familiar GPTs to plugins has sometimes felt like this. Links are harder to find, continuity feels disrupted, and the experience feels more generic. The tool gets a new outfit. I get another instruction manual.

An upgrade earns its place when it improves the work I actually need done. So let us give the new brain a small job interview.

Give it a real task

Choose something you struggled with recently: an introduction, a summary or a formatting job. Give both versions the same material and instructions in fresh chats. Keep settings and available context comparable. When the model, plugin and instructions all change together, you are comparing whole setups.

Then check five things:

  1. Instructions. Did it do what you asked? “Keep related ideas together” should survive contact with the paragraph.
  2. Facts. Open its sources. Do they support its claims? Confidence is a lovely costume. It is still a costume.
  3. Voice. Does it sound like you, or like a brochure applying for management?
  4. Repair work. Count corrections and time spent fixing them. A quick answer can leave you with a slow afternoon.
  5. Boundaries. Test agents on harmless copies. Check their actual actions against your instructions. Suggesting, drafting and publishing require different permissions.

One result is a clue. Repeat on another real task before drawing a bigger conclusion.

When the upgrade fails the interview

Check what changed: instructions, available context, tools or permissions. Restore the useful parts you can, then retry one small task. Keep copies of your own instructions and a few good outputs as references.

Count the whole cost, too: money, correction time and relearning. Lower API prices can help people paying for usage. They do not automatically lower a monthly subscription. Your afternoon also belongs on the bill.

A useful upgrade should leave you with work finished and energy remaining. That is a result worth celebrating.

If my AI gets a promotion and I get more work, somebody has misunderstood the job description.
